Biodegradable Lure (Fishing Bait) Development of "EDUM"
Development of lure material that does not use environmental hormones(endocrine disrupting chemicals). The material will dissolve into "water" and "carbon dioxide" within a short period of time, and will not lead to death as a result of constipation in fish and birds that mistakenly eat the worms. We were able to develop a worm that does not include plasticizers, will completely dissolve in as little as 9 weeks (previous products took almost 2 years), and will pass through the natural digestive process without remaining in the body of fish that eat the worm.

- It's imperative to do this in conjunction with measures to improve the behavior of the fishing community. <Mr.Nagashima>
- This is a valuable endeavor. I hope it is applied to other areas. <Dr.Kubo>
- I hope this will help deal with the problem of discarded fishing line. <Mr.Oguro>
- I strongly recommend this project due to the fact that 'sport fishing is and has been immensely destructive to both marine and fresh water environments in Japan. This is an excellent program.<Dr. Moyer>

String for tennis and badminton racket heads made from biodegradable plastic
A world first in developing a biodegradable racket string made from corn. Combining durability and strength, the string is highly playable, yet biodegradable to reduce environmental impact. We are also in the process of developing fishing line and wire used for grass cuttings.
|
- I hope to see even greater developments in biodegradable materials.<Mr. Nagashima>
- I hope to see this applied to other areas.<Dr. Kubo>
- If top professionals use this, it will send a message that which will reach even the youngest players.<Mr. Oguro>

White line and grip powder from eggshells
Main products include Gaia Field Line for making white lines on sports grounds and Gaia Rogin for a firm grip. Made from natural materials and not harmful (even if swallowed by a child), we produce products that are good for athletes and the environment. 250,000 tons of eggshell waste is produced annually, 80% of which is burned, producing CO2 emissions. Green Techno 21 has concentrated on developing products that incorporate and reuse this waste product.
|
- Focusing on eggshells is very unique. Hopefully this will bring the idea some good publicity.<Mr. Nagashima>
- I'm looking forward to further applications and development from this project.<Dr. Kubo>
- The action itself is quite basic, but it has great educational value for teaching children through a simple activity how we can creatively reuse things around us, such as food leftovers, and about the purpose of zero
emissions.<Ms. Unoura>
- It's a fun way to easily to understand where things come from.<Mr. Oguro>

From Broken Bats to 'Homerun Hashi'
Most Japanese professional baseball players use bats made from ash trees. However, as forestation was not done in the past, and because it takes approximately 70 years from the time a tree is planted to the point where it can be used to make a bat, the last few years have seen the ash tree population reduced at a frightening speed. Further, up to now, broken bats and the shavings produced during the bat making process have been discarded as waste. With a desire to protect such limited resources, the "Society for the Growth of Ash Resources" began collecting broken bats from 12 professional baseball teams as well as from amateur teams. These bats are reprocessed into products such as our 'Homerun Hashi' chopsticks, shoehorns, and paper knives.
|
- Increasing awareness among athletes such as baseball players that use wooden bats made from a precious resource, is a wonderful initiative.<Mr. Nabashima>
- I hope to see this applied to other areas.<Dr. Kubo>
- I'd like to see these valuable actions go beyond Japanese baseball, to a worldwide audience.<Ms. Unoura>
- It's a great opportunity when one considers the influence of baseball and size of the fan base in Japan. The naming is interesting too.<Mr. Oguro>

Mizuno Global Environmental Conservation Project "CREW21" Project
Started in September 1991 with an understanding that environmental issues were an important theme to which today's sports world (industry) could not turn a blind.
5 concepts in developing an environmentally friendly product
- Using recyclable materials in part or all of a product
- Developing reusable materials - breaking down the used product into raw materials for reuse
- Developing sustainable materials that can be broken down after use and used as raw material in other products.
- Develop products that do not have an adverse effect on the environment during use or after disposal.
- Develop products that do not have harmful environmental effects or release harmful by-products during the production process.
|
- Environmentally friendly products should be promoted more.<Mr. Nagashima>
- I can highly recommend such comprehensive measures. It is important to publicize enterprises undertaking such measures (and expand their educational influence).<Dr. Kubo>
- As a sporting goods manufacturer, I'd like to see Crew 21's actions promoted internationally as well.<Ms. Unoura>
- I'd like to see such action continue and become the universal standard.<Mr. Oguro>
