The environment and the Olympic movement

The surrounding environment and its products, such as clean air, pure water and healthy foods, all affect the health and performance of an athlete. There are many actions that we can take in our everyday lives, as well as in sports, that will reduce our burden on the surrounding environment.

To reduce air pollution

You can take the following measures that minimize the use of fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil.

1. Use public transportation
2. Use non-motorized means of transportation such as bicycles or walking.
3. Car pool when traveling to games or practice.
4. Use cleaner burning fuels in your car.
5. Don't leave your car idling for more than a minute.
6. Turn off air conditioners, heaters, lights and equipment that are not being used.
7. Choosing equipment and facilities with smaller energy demands.

Water pollution

The following measures can be carried out to help maintain clean water bodies.

1. Select personal and household cleaning products that are naturally biodegradable.
2. Reduce or eliminate the use of non-organic pesticides and fertilizers at home and on sports fields.
3. Not dumping toxic materials such as paints, oils, solvents and non-biodegradable cleaning agents into water bodies or storm drains.
4. Promoting water conservation and recycling practices.
5. When boating, do not toss garbage overboard but keep it in the boat until you can properly recycle or dispose of it on land.
6. Make sure swimming pools are being monitored for proper chemical levels.

Preserve resoueces

The following measures can be enacted.

1. Reduce the amount you consume-avoid unnecessary purchases and those that contain harmful compounds.
2. Reuse items as much as possible-buy sturdy long lasting items that can be repaired and reused, instead of throwing away products; donate old items to second hand shops.
3. Recycle as many items as possible-participate in the recycling programs in your region; compost your food and garden waste.
4. Respect the natural space you use for sport and recreation, such as forests, fields, lakes, riverbanks and wetlands-try to leave no trace of your presence.
