London 2012 On Track But Green Target Unlikely
London 2012 falls short of meeting its target to source at least 20 per cent of energy from new local renewable schemes, according to Environmental Data Interactive Exchange.
David Stubs, head of sustainability at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), told the London Assembly's environment committee it is increasingly unlikely the target will be met, partly because of the cancellation of a wind turbine scheme and a lack of other large-scale renewable energy projects in the city.
Committee chairman Darren Johnson said, "London said it would provide the greenest Games ever, and although good progress is being made in many areas, it is disappointing that organizers don't expect to meet their renewable energy target. With the event still two years away I hope the London 2012 team will do everything they can to power the Games with as much energy as possible from renewable sources and help London live up to the promises it made".
Environmental Data Interactive Exchange reports another potential setback is lack of progress on developing new waste processing facilities. Shaun McCarthy, chairman of the Commission for Sustainable London 2012, said it was not likely to happen in time for the Summer Games.
But there will reportedly be significant amounts of clean energy generation taking place in and around the Olympic Park as biomass boilers, which burn waste wood, and about 50,000 square metres of solar panels will be installed.
Meanwhile, according to a report released Monday, data from the Government and Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has confirmed that it has cut its budget by 27 million pounds with the new government's target.
ODA chief executive David Higgins said, "with a little over two years to go until the Games we are in good shape - on schedule and within budget. We have hit all our milestones for 2010 and announced the next set which will take us to next summer when the main venues and infrastructure needed for the Games will be complete".
