Annecy 2018 gets on track with 'green' rail station to set transport standard
May 27: The Annecy 2018 bid has opened the new multi-faceted rail station which it considers a pilot project for sustainable transportation hubs for the future. The building is transparent and spaciously airy allowing for maximum natural light and reducing the energy needs of the building.
Chair of the Annecy 2018 board, Christian Monteil, inaugurated the new station at Bellegarde-sur-Valserine. Monteil is also president of the Haute-Savoie General Council for the region.
Jean-Pierre Vidal, head of the Annecy 2018 Sustainable Development Advisory Group, said: “Sustainable development and protecting the land are one of the main forces of Annecy 2018’s bid for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The new station serves as a stop for a new train line that will link Geneva to Paris in less than three hours making the area more accessible. This will be a boost to the Haute-Savoie region’s already solid winter sports tourism market.
Vidal added, “The project will be the occasion for the area to set the example for the 21st century, in terms of development and construction, notably for winter sports resorts by privileging the improvement of transportation and access.”
The hub also services all forms of transportation rail, bus, cars, cycles and pedestrian traffic.
Annecy is in the bid race for the 2018 winter Olympics competing against PyeongChang and another European competitor Munich. The decision will be made for the host city in July 2011 in Durban at the IOC Session.
