Sochi 2014 Presents Environmental Strategy

November 10, 2009--The environmental strategy for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games has been published online following a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Kozak, and Theodore Oben, official representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Deputy Prime Minister Kozak said, "environmental projects during preparations for the Sochi 2014 Winter Games are an absolute priority for the Russian Government. This isn't just a question about the future, results are being seen today".

UNEP representative Oben expressed his satisfaction with the steps taken by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee to fulfill its environment commitments in venues construction. He said, "Sochi 2014's environmental strategy is a clear sign that it is eager to integrate environmental aspects into Games preparations. The Environmental strategy would guide various stakeholders to insure that the Games are truly in harmony with nature".

Chernyshenko said, "Sochi 2014 is a unique project for our country from an environmental point of view. We have to combine a huge construction program with the cutting-edge environmental approaches, and this will be part of an incredible legacy for the whole of Russia.

"The unique nature of this project is also demonstrated by the fact that Sochi 2014 environment program unites our diverse stakeholders, from federal ministries to non-governmental organizations. Our collective commitment continues to attract the active collaboration of world-leading environmental organizations".
