Madrid’s 32nd Green Marathon Shining Example of City’s Sporting Spirit

Madrid, 27 April 2009 – The streets of Madrid were crowded with cheering supporters yesterday as thousands of runners completed the 32nd Madrid Marathon, which this year highlighted the green credentials and sporting passion of Spain’s capital city.

In line with the Madrid 2016 bid to be the ‘Happy Green Games’ the theme for the marathon this year was environmentally friendly practice. Information was given to runners, spectators and organizers on how to be ‘green’ prior to the marathon. Environmental studies of the route were carried out and organizers ensured environmentally friendly cleaning and maintenance of the circuit, showers and WCs.

Underpinned by the support of more than 500 volunteers, the marathon was once again an example of Madrid’s passion for sport. A ‘Green Team’ of volunteers ensured the recycling of all materials used throughout the day and other volunteers ensured the smooth running of yesterday’s event by taking charge of a range of important duties from the start to finish line.

This support of dedicated volunteers and members of the public who have a passion for sport is central to staging a successful 2016 Olympic Games in Madrid. With 92.6% of Madrid’s citizens in favour, over 25,000 volunteers signed up to get involved and with regular sporting events like the marathon, the city shows it is more than ready to host the Games in 2016.
