Innovation and Inspiration: Harnessing the Power of Sport for Change

The worlds of sport and environment will gather in Vancouver from March 29 - 31, 2009 at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre to learn more about global innovations that are helping sport reduce its environmental footprint.

The World Conference on Sport and the Environment is convened biennially by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The 2009 WCSE in Vancouver is being presented in partnership with the Province of British Columbia and marks the first time this event is being held in North America.

The theme for the 2009 conference is Innovation and Inspiration: Harnessing the Power of Sport for Change. Participants will be provided a timely opportunity to help determine how sport steps up to the challenge of advancing environmental progress, even during a time of economic uncertainty. The conference will also showcase the progress being made by the Olympic Movement in the field of sustainable development.

The World Conference on Sport and the Environment typically attracts a global audience of many hundreds of participants, including representatives from the IOC, UNEP, National Olympic Committees and International Sports Federations, past and current Organizing Committees, candidate cities (current and aspiring), other major international sporting events, governments, corporate sponsors, academic institutions and environmental organizations.
