Rowing NZ up for IOC award over green strategies

16 March 2009--Rowing New Zealand's green approach to hosting the 2010 world championships at Lake Karapiro have seen it nominated for an Olympic environmental award.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its commission for sport and environment recently launched the IOC Award for Sport and the Environment to encourage and acknowledge the implementation of outstanding and sustainable environmental practices.

Environmental strategies and plans for the 2010 world championships at Lake Karapiro, called the Rainbow Project, caught the eye of the IOC, securing a nomination for the award.

Winners will be announced at the next world conference on sport and the environment in Vancouver at the end of the month.

"There will be one winner from each continent, and we have been advised that Karapiro 2010 has been shortlisted for the Australasian award," Karapiro 2010 chief executive Tom Mayo said today.

The championships will be held between October 29-November 7.
