London 2012 Sustainability Update

9 December 2008--A year ahead of the publication of the London 2012 Sustainability Plan, the first update was published Tuesday that shows London 2012 is on track to achieve its goal of being a truly sustainability Games said a press release.

Work has started on the Energy Centre; a dedicated rail head has been built on the Olympic Park contributing to the delivery of materials by sustainable means; a Timber Supply Panel has been established to ensure only legal and sustainable timber is used; and a Biodiversity Action Plan has been submitted for planning approval, detailing the type of habitats that will be left after the Games.

There is also ongoing work to determine the carbon footprint of the Games; four Sustainability partners have signed up; a Sustainable Sourcing Code has been published; and there are Summer and Winter of Sport initiatives and the Government's free swimming commitment promoting healthier lifestyles.

The Sustainability Plan - Towards A One Planet 2012, identifies five priority themes - climate change, waste, biodiversity, inclusion (promoting inclusion and attitude change especially towards disability), and healthy living.
