Sochi 2014 Began Its Zero Waste Balance Project
1 October 2008--As part of the Sochi 2014 Games Plan a new modern waste processing plant will be constructed in Sochi. It will provide an urban waste processing system for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond by replacing waste burning technology.
As part of this process a 70 meter stretch of pipe from the old Sochi waste burning plant was decommissioned today by a controlled explosion. Effective preparation ensured that the 700 tons of pipe were deconstructed without any damage to nearby buildings.
The new 30 million Euro waste processing plant - which will employ a complex system to recycle household waste - will be the first of its kind in Russia when it is completed in 2010. Not only will it recycle 240 tons of waste a year - more than double the existing waste burning plant - but it will also categorize all waste to ensure the most effective recycling possible.
The main manufacturer of the waste processing plant undertook a similar project ahead of Torino 2006 before collaborating with Sochi 2014. It’s a perfect demonstration of the knowledge sharing that takes place between Organizing Committees.
On top of the waste processing plant, the Sochi 2014 Zero Waste Balance project also includes plans to develop facilities that will allow for the full processing of both hard household and biological waste from across the city.
The Sochi 2014 President and CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko said:
"Sochi 2014 is committed to an environmental policy that will not only protect, but also enhance the overall environment of the region. The new waste processing plant in Sochi is already under construction. This is a very important urban infrastructure development that is a direct result of Sochi hosting the 2014 Winter Games. The plant will provide visitors to the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games with a comfortable environment and will also create favorable living conditions in the region for future generations."
