Sochi 2014 Begins Environmental Monitoring Project

As part of Sochi 2014's commitment to deliver a "positive" environmental legacy from Russia's first Winter Games, a research expedition visited a series of Olympic locations in Sochi 2014's compact Mountain Cluster in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains, where the Sochi 2014 Games take place.

Environmental experts from Sochi 2014 and a group of academics began Wednesday to monitor and evaluate the flora and fauna around the site of the 2014 Games to create the first comprehensive record of the region's herbs and edible plants. They were joined by students from the physiological department of the People's Friendship University of Russia.

According to Sochi 2014 the results of the monitoring and evaluation, including photographs of flora and fauna, will lead to a major update of the database of wildlife in the Krasnadar Region.

Sochi 2014 President and CEO, Dmitry Chernyshenko said, "one of Sochi 2014's most important commitments is to conserve the unique natural habitat of Sochi. During the design projection and construction of all Olympic venues and infrastructure, the environment is an absolutely key consideration.

"But our commitment doesn't stop at protecting the environment around my beautiful home city. We will also enhance knowledge of the ecosystem through the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, delivering a strong green legacy for the region".
