Recycling Aurora Stadium

August 2008--The Minister for the Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts, Michelle O’Byrne, today launched the introduction of recycling systems at the Tasmanian home of the Hawthorn Football Club, Aurora Stadium.

New recycling and waste bins with bright Do the Right Thing signs have been installed around the oval, ready for all future events at the stadium.

“This project gives people attending Aurora Stadium the opportunity to Do the Right Thing for the environment. Patrons and caterers will now be able to recycle in the stadium by having the systems in place to do what they are already doing extremely well at home,” Ms O’Byrne said.

The recycling initiative, backed by the Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) and Launceston City Council, involves the installation of new front and back of house recycling bins and signage promoting the PSF’s well known brand Do the Right Thing.
“Many of us are familiar with the Do the Right Thing logo and the respect for the environment it represents,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Recycling not only helps to keep our environment free of litter, but also reduces the carbon emissions associated with packaging and waste."

The Packaging Stewardship Forum’s General Manager, Jenny Pickles, said she was confident that the new infrastructure will reduce litter levels and increase recycling rates.

“We’ve recently put similar systems into Bellerive Oval in Hobart. This has significantly reduced litter and increased recycling of plastic bottles and cups. So far 6000 kilograms worth of recyclable material has been collected and we are aiming for the same successful results at Aurora Stadium.”

Chairman of the York Park and Inveresk Precinct Authority, Robin McKendrick, is also looking forward to the new recycling initiative and believes the bins will contribute towards a cleaner environment for the stadium and its patrons.

“Crowds of up to 23,000 are going to be recycling and doing the right thing for the environment at the many events held at Aurora, which include AFL and VFL matches, World Cup Rugby, A-League Soccer, concerts and the Royal Launceston Show,” Mr McKendrick said.

“That’s a lot of bottles and cups that will be diverted from landfill and recycled.”
