Surfer’s Path
Launched in 1997, Surfer’s Path claims to be the first truly ‘green’ surfing magazine printed on 100% post consumer recycled paper, with non-GMO soy inks. Extending their green credentials even further, they are now offering the magazine in a digital format and last year held the 1st Annual Surfer’s Path Green Wave Awards.
The decision to make the original print edition ‘green’ was, according to the founding Editor, Alex Dick-Read, “…simple common sense: the survival of our surf spots is directly linked to the health of our rivers and streams. The wholesale clear-cutting of forest ecosystems, along with the treatment of wood pulp with toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach in the manufacturing of paper, link directly to many of the water-quality problems being addressed by numerous global environmental organizations, like the Surfrider Foundation and Save Our Surf.”
As a trial issue, the new online edition of Surfer’s Path is offered free. In addition to the environmental benefits of the digital version, the online magazine offers additional features, including keyword search facilities, live web links contained within the pages, access to a back issues archive and the convenience of being able to access the issue at any time.
Awareness of the importance of protecting the natural environment has been filtering through the surfing industry, as the magazine discovered last year from the wave of responses they received when calling for nominees for the 1st Annual Surfer’s Path Green Wave Awards.
The Awards were established to honor ‘excellence and achievement in promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness in the surfing world’, and with the assistance of the organization, SustainAbility, winners were chosen in seven categories, although as Dick-Read states, “because of the efforts of each and every one of these nominees – we are all winners.”
Across the world of surfing, awards were given to given to manufacturers, surf travel companies, surf-related media, surfing individuals, surfing NPOs, surfing apparel companies and surf accessory manufacturers. Overall awards went to Glenn Hening, co-founder of the Surfrider Foundation, and Chris Hines, founder of Surfers Against Sewage.
