Ski Club of Great Britain

Green credentials are unfortunately not usually associated with skiing and snowboarding, and resorts are often accused of damaging fragile mountain habitats. In response, the Ski Club of Great Britain has launched a comprehensive array of measures to help safeguard the natural environment and the long-term future of skiing.

Among the organization’s initiatives are:
A. Respect the Mountain: Development and promotion of the Respect the Mountain campaign.
B. Donating money to tree-planting scheme: A percentage of membership subscriptions and all profits from the sale of Respect the Mountain goods are put towards a long-term tree planting scheme and other environmental projects.
C. Research Project: A research project called "Sustainable Alpine Tourism: the British Ski Industry’s Role in Developing Sustainability in the French Alps" will be published on skiclub.co.uk soon.
D. Environmental Audit: An environmental audit of the Club's offices was performed to aim to reduce energy used and to increase recycling.
E. Office Policy: The Ski Club clubhouse recycles paper, cardboard and printer cartridges. Low-wattage light bulbs are used where possible and all Ski Club literature is printed on paper from a certified sustainable source. The majority of office staff cycle, walk or get public transport to work.
F. Train Travel Information: Train travel is currently generally considered to be more environmentally friendly than flying. The Club provides its members with comprehensive information on train travel to ski resorts from the UK.
G. Green Holidays: Information can be found on specific 'green' holidays with environmental or safety elements.
H. Environmental Code of Practice: The Club developed the following 'Seven Steps' that all skiers and snowboarders should follow.
1. Be aware of your environmental impact as skiers and boarders
2. Do not leave litter on the slopes
3. Respect the natural habitat of mountain animals and plants
4. Choose a resort that uses environmentally friendly practices
5. Encourage tour operators to adopt green policies
6. Do your bit to reduce global warming on holiday and at home
7. Reduce CO2 emissions
I. Green Resort Guide: The Club has published this unique guide that contains detailed resort environmental information.
