Gillette Stadium

Gillette Stadium, a 68,000-seat venue in Foxboro, Massachusetts, USA, is New England's premier open-air entertainment venue, and is home to the New England Patriots. Constructed by Skanska, the design and operation of the facility has incorporated a number of environmentally friendly features.

According to Skanska, the project is a good example of partnerships with multi-stakeholder involvement designed to achieve sustainable development. Constructing Gillette Stadium gave the owner, regulatory agencies, and the Design/Build team the opportunity to rectify previous acts that were less than friendly to the environment.

Skanska USA Building Inc, New England Division is the only company within the sector in the country that is certified to ISO 14 001. Through this environmental management system approach in the construction process, the Project Team has led the company to environmental successes. Notable amongst environmental measures in the Gillette Stadium project were:

Energy saving program
The team installed a series of timing devices in the electrical distribution system that automatically shutdown all non-essential lightning after hours, thereby conserving electrical energy and lowering power consumption.

Restoration of a river
The design team proposed a solution for the restoration of a culverted river into a free-flowing riverbed and steps taken to "seed" the river bed with appropriate flora. The result was a creation of a new ecosystem that enhanced the reestablishment of wildlife into an area that was formerly asphalt paving.

On-site wastewater treatment facility
Another environmental feature proposed by the design team was the stadium's on-site wastewater treatment facility. This system allows the reuse of sanitary drainage after treatment in the form of a "gray" water supply to the thousands of water closets in the new facility.

Extensive resource management
130,000 cubic yards of blasted open rock was processed through on-site crushers and re-used on site resulting in over 90% of the residual products were diverted from the region's shrinking landfill space.

For its extensive resource management program and multi-stakeholder involvement, the project won Skanska's Environmental Prize for outstanding environmental contribution 2002 in the category for construction projects.
