Environment Prominent at WFSGI Meetings
The World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) held its
summer session 27-28 June in Munich, Germany ahead of the ISPO Summer
sports trade fair at the Messe Munchen International. At the meetings
were the representatives of the world's leading sports manufacturers,
and the first item on the session's agenda was the environment.
The WFSGI is a non-profit organization, recognized by the International
Olympic Committee (IOC), and is the world authoritative body for the
sports industry. Made up of industry suppliers, national organizations
and sporting goods industry related businesses, the WFSGI serves many
functions including relations with international sports federations,
the IOC, ethics in the industry, intellectual property rights, the
promotion of free and fair trading and the environment. This year
the organization celebrates its 25th anniversary.
The environmental committee address a number of issues related to
the industry. Their mission statement is to:
1. Coordinate the activities of the environmental problems related
to the industry around the world
2. Promote WFSGI standards on the ecology within the industry
3. Gather all information with respects to the ecology regulations
affecting the industry
The summer session saw a number of presentations, beginning with WFSGI
President, Mr. Masato Mizuno, whose own company is one of the industry's
leaders in environmental considerations. Mr. Mizuno outlined many
of the environmental problem we face today and showcased the efforts
Mizuno Corporation is taking to address them. Frank Henke of Adidas-Salomon
gave an update on the 'restricted substances' guideline project and
Global Sports Alliance (GSA) gave a presentation of their projects
to increase environmental awareness and action among the sports community.

more detail in the coming weeks.
